The company’s two new journals provide a new peer-reviewed Open Access publication format. This format allows the public to access research for free immediately after publication. Digital articles are entered in all major aggregators’ databases for high web visibility.

The organization seeks an experienced Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to serve a critical role in the publication of its journals. The winning candidate must have PhD level education in psychology or a related field. The position is based in the company’s Missoula, Montana offices. Missoula is a university town which offers an engaging mix of culture and the raw beauty of the American West. It’s been said of the town that… “no one wants to come here…but when they do…no one wants to leave!”

The EIC reports to the CEO. A highly competitive compensation and benefits package awaits the winning candidate. Relocation assistance is available.


Editors receive manuscripts or revisions; assign reviewers; collate and arrange all reviewers’ comments; edit manuscripts according to Journal standards; write instructional, directive editorial letters to authors with reviewers’ comments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Other duties may be assigned:

* Accurate and consistent handling of electronic and paper files for manuscripts, following office procedures.

* Organizational ability and willingness to follow formal procedures are required, as is an overall attitude of cooperation and support toward other employees, authors, associate editors, reviewers, and other contributors to the publication process.

* Selection of reviewers for each manuscript based on manuscript topic and expertise of reviewers as well as known history of reviewers’ competencies.

* Checking iThenticate records to detect and handle any problems with plagiarism, etc.

* Write editorial letters to communicate reviewers’ comments and editors’ guidance on language use, missing information, format, statistical problems, etc.

* A supportive, respectful, and informative manner is absolutely essential in all communications. The editor will be trained to work with the company’s electronic manuscript system to prepare materials for the author’s viewing and corrections and also for further processing.

* Use of e-mail for certain minor communications with authors or reviewers. Knowledge of safe electronic file-handling so that e-mails or letters are consistently and properly saved in Aries to allow follow-up, and paper copies saved in the physical files.

* Timely handling of manuscripts and revisions with seasonally changing workload.

* Preparation of manuscripts for composition.

* From time to time, the editor will participate in meetings to discuss and resolve issues related to any part of the publication process; the topics will vary widely, so an ability to understand publication issues will be needed.

* An open attitude and desire to learn is fundamental. A desire to improve one’s abilities and improve the services to authors and subscribers is an essential part of that attitude.

* Attendance/punctuality: is consistently at work during regular hours; ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent.


To perform as Editor-in-Chief successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

* Ph.D. level education in academic psychology. Candidates with PhD level education in clinical psychology, kinesiology, neuroscience, or sociology will also be considered.
* Broad personal experience in experimental research, publication of own research, and the publication process in general.
* Previous experience as a journal editor is preferred.
* Skill in communicating ideas via letters and e-mails is required, e.g., directive, detailed instructions to authors. Superior English skills are necessary, as well as an ability to decipher and improve manuscripts written in imperfect English.
* Excellent working knowledge of common statistical procedures and how they should be reported.
* Facility with word processing software, e-mail, web operations, general computer functions and safe file handling.
